Replacing and Upgrading Bowden Tubing

Replacing and Upgrading Bowden Tubing image

When and why to replace PTFE tubing and how to choose the right one.

PTFE (Teflon) tube is part of both bowden and direct drive systems:

⏰ When to replace: • Tube is yellow or brown (PTFE degradation) • Visible cracks or bends • Poor fit in coupler (filament jams) • After extended ABS/ASA printing at high temperatures • Routinely every 300–500 print hours

📏 PTFE tube dimensions: • Standard: 4 mm OD, 2 mm ID (for 1.75 mm filament) • Capricorn XS: 4 mm OD, 1.9 mm ID – less play = better retraction • For 3 mm filament: 3.2 mm ID

🏆 Recommended brands: • Capricorn XS – gold standard, significantly reduces stringing • Bondtech PTFE – premium quality • Original E3D – reliable for standard printing • Cheap copies – work, but degrade faster

🔧 How to install properly: 1. Cut tube exactly at 90° (no angled cuts) 2. Insert firmly into coupler (Bowden fitting) – click = correct 3. For MK3/Prusa-style: tube must reach all the way to nozzle (no gap!) 4. Always test filament passage before closing

⚠️ Never print ABS/ASA at 250+ °C with cheap PTFE – releases harmful fumes.
