Layer Height and Print Quality

Layer Height and Print Quality image

The thinner the layer, the smoother the surface—but be careful of trade-offs.

Layer height affects print appearance and strength:

📏 Recommended values: • 0.1 mm – very high quality, slow (figurines, miniatures) • 0.15 mm – excellent quality, reasonable speed • 0.2 mm – standard, best speed/quality ratio ✅ • 0.3 mm – fast printing, rougher surface (functional parts) • 0.4 mm – very fast, visible layers

⚠️ Layer height rule: Layer height should not exceed 75% of nozzle diameter. Example: 0.4 mm nozzle → max layer height 0.3 mm

💡 Tips: • Use smaller heights for first and last layers • Variable layer height (VLH) in PrusaSlicer and Cura • Larger nozzles (0.6–0.8 mm) = faster printing of coarser parts
